A VISITOR APPROACHETH

Well, my brother is coming to visit for two weeks. I can’t believe it’s come up so quickly; at one point it surely seemed like he would never get here. He’ll be here just in time for the Blue Hill Fair, and hopefully we’ll have some beautiful early fall weather for the rest of his stay. I can’t wait!

In the meantime, I’m trying to get things in order for my work so that I can take some quality time off and make the most of it. I got some new responsibilities a week ago, which technically don’t start until September, but I’d like to get my head around some of the bigger ideas first. I’ll also be working down in Stonington at least once a week. The island in the fall is a lovely place to be, and I’m happy to have a reason to go down there more often.

Last winter, when Emma and I lived there, it was the best possible winter. A big, heavy snowfall that never really melted. Beyond avoiding mud that way, it was also a bit like living in a snow globe, almost fake. After so many disappointing Midwest winters — cold and dry — a mild, wet winter was awesome. Of course, this winter will probably be brutally cold with no snow. C’est la vie, eh?
